Double Exposure

As part of the fourth Tbilisi Architecture Biennial, “Correct Mistakes”, which explores the theme of natural resources with particular attention to water, Double Exposure is a collective journey through Georgia.

Conceived as an itinerant workshop, this exploration brings together a group of varied backgrounds (architects / artists / students / photographers / anthropologists) for a shared journey around a common project: observing territorial dynamics through the course of water, reconstructed from glacier to city, passing through the territory’s infrastructure and drawing on the geographical similarities between Georgia and Switzerland.

Through a series of exercises, the group collects physical and visual artefacts such as objects, texts, drawings, photographs, sounds, traces, fragments, stories and memories. Each stage of the journey is an opportunity to question the territory from a specific angle.

GLACIER - PRESENCE ABSENCE
Forgetting, memory and traces of a past

RIVER AND RESERVOIR - NATURAL ARTIFICIAL
Transformation through infrastructure and human intervention

LAKE - REALITY FICTION
Water as a source of leisure

CITY - INTENTIONAL ACCIDENTAL
Networks and ambiguities in the urban environment

The physical presentation of the collected photos and texts takes the form of an on-site installation, within the grounds of the Tbilisi Institute of Hydrometeorology. Like a mobile puzzle, 408 cards are assembled and laid side by side to form a large suspended drape. On one side, they compose the graphic map of a conceptual territory; on the other, a sequence of characters reveals a written message. The whole appears as a mosaic that reflects the plurality of voices and composes an imaginary collective landscape.
