Drawing on the archives of Matrix, the radical feminist architecture cooperative of the 1980s, the exhibition questions how inclusive our buildings and shared spaces are. Matrix’s work explored the relationship between community and the built environment, and traced the impact of feminist theory and critique on architecture and urban design.
Echoing the practices documented in the Matrix archives, the scenography explores the act of building as an integral part of the design process. Standard elements from the construction site, such as fences, tools, plinths and trellises, are reinterpreted, turning the exhibition space into a space for collective action.
The exhibition was produced in collaboration with the curators Tiago P. Borges, Teresa Cheung and Silvia Groaz, the Archizoom team, the Trojans collective and the teaching unit DRAG (UE). We warmly thank the companies Marti and C. Pousaz, and the City of Lausanne, for their generous contributions.
